ART OF CATS ART STUDIO
AND CAT SANCTUARY
We keep only a few cats at a time at our sanctuary to comply with city law. (p.s. many thanks to cat-lover Chris Conner who has provided us with a free attorney.) Most of the cats in our photos were placed with good homes long ago. Our environments built for cats are filled with catwalks, ladders, & cat stairs. These bamboo catwalks line every ceiling in the building, so the cats can run around the entire perimeter of the house, up above the office and art studio.

We are only able to take in two or three cats at a time, which are usually placed with new homes within a couple weeks. We place an average of 3 cats a month with good homes. Many people underestimate how important toys & treats are to cats. We even have a miniature pool table for visiting cats, they love it!

We've been working on this project for 7 years, concentrating on downtown for the last 5 years. We've placed over 40 cats with homes of people who live & work in the Pike Market area alone!

When a cat can look down at you from a catwalk it builds their self-confidence. When a cat looks down over you, it feels superior to you,in control of you & everything in the house. This dates back to a primordial instinct: the cat could pounce onto whatever was below it. The cat feels it has the superior vantage point. Also the cat can finally look you right in your eyes, instead always looking at your ankles.

ARE WE NON-PROFIT?
That would be an understatement, we've put thousands of dollars of our own wages into our cat projects.Jason makes sandwiches at a Quiznos & Patrick is a popular pet portrait artist. transpixel

transpixel We are more than a studio for animal paintings, our office/studio is also a very special environment built especially for cats. Over the last seven years, we've placed over 200 cats with first-rate homes. Most of these cats come from four different sources: people who approach us at the market, homeless folks who know the area around... transpixel

Our first project when bringing the cat into our environment is to inspect it for possible health problems, then give it intensive affection & attention to win its trust as quickly as possible. transpixel

transpixel We do not charge money for placing a cat with a home, our goal is to get the cat to the person who will give it the most attention. One of our methods for socializing cats is to build elaborate environments for them of catwalks & ladders that resemble the outdoors. We also spend personal time each day spoiling the cats with toys and treats. transpixel

transpixel Our specialty is "socializing" cats, winning their trust to such a great degree that the cats can go out in public, visit a vet without being afraid, or be placed with a new home without being fearful. Many of the cats we've socialized have been placed with elderly or wheelchairbound people who need an especially friendly cat. Many of the people we've placed cats with live or work at the Pike Place Market, and the Market has kindly issued us a permit for our occasional appearances there.

We'd like to thank the many websites from the USA & around the world who have put links to us or favorable mention on their pages. Some of our favorites can be seen in the album called "Other Sites to See." transpixel

transpixel We don't train cats, they train us. We accomplish our method of socializing, or winning the complete trust of cats by spending a great deal of time with them (frequently on the floor on all fours, in their world), but mostly by attaching the same importance to a cat that one would give to a human being, and never underestimating their intelligence or their many needs.

To see more pictures of our cat environments, and pictures of cats we've socialized and then placed with homes, see the album in this gallery called "Secrets of the Wonder Cats."

transpixel Cubby, our highly socialized cat, loves his short visits to the Pike Place Market, where he has been a beloved part of the community for many years.Cubby is visited over and over by hundreds of people who live and work at or near the Market, and many of the elderly residents of downtown housing developments. He has delighted travelers from all over the world, and helped to teach thousands of people that cats are so much more than "just cats." Cubby literally believes that he owns this corner at Pike Place, and walks about the sidewalk freely, he thinks it's his "territory."For more about Cubby the Cat and the Cat Man of the Pike Place Market, see the albums in our Gallery. transpixel
